Limits are typically either $2,500, $5,000, and $10,000 and is an additional coverage you must add to your auto policy. Personal Injury Protection covers medical cost or lost income up to the coverage limits for you or any of your passengers. The limits on your policy is for each person that is injured so if you and one of your passengers were injured, each of you would be eligible for the full limit of the coverage limit and not split between you.
People always ask what is the difference between PIP and Medpay coverage. The main difference is that Medpay will not pay for lost wages as does PIP coverage. Another difference to keep in mind is that if you were paid say $10,000 from the other persons insurance company for medical cost, you would have to reimburse money you received for medical cost from your insurance company on a Medpay plan. Contrast that with PIP in this same scenario, you would still get to keep any PIP money you had received.
