In some states this coverage is mandatory and in others it is optional. Uninsured motorist is coverage to protect you in cases where the other driver hits you and does not have auto insurance. In a case such as this, your uninsured motorist would pay for the damage to your vehicle.

For an accident with another driver and the other drive does not have enough insurance limits to cover the damages, your underinsured motorist would cover the shortage of insurance up to the limits of your underinsured coverage limits.

The cost of adding uninsured/underinsured motorist (also known as UM/UIM) is very low. It just makes sense to have it on your policy. Couple of things to note with this coverage. The other driver has to be at fault for this coverage to be used and even though your insurance is paying for the other drivers mistake, you are not penalized or given points for the accident. Also in some states you can use this coverage in cases of a hit and run. To use it for an accident where you don't know who hit your vehicle there are a couple of requirements to be eligible for a paid claim. As always with any coverage we discuss here, always refer to your insurance carrier or agent to verify coverages and definitions on your particular policy in your state.
